How you'd know when you are a hit...

Author John Ross, who wrote a novel about guns and politics called Unintended Consequences, when asked about his proudest moment as an author on this site.

What has been your proudest moment as a writer?

There were a number of good memories, such as getting my first four-figure check, seeing the pallets of bound copies of my novel at the publisher's warehouse, doing my first public book signing, and getting asked to address a discussion club for the first time.

However, these all pale compared to what happened when I listened to my voicemail messages one day and heard the following message:

[Agitated woman] "John Ross? Is this thing recording? I just thought you'd like to know that you and your goddamn book have ruined my honeymoon. Probably my marriage, too. I can't believe my-" [muffled sound, a second voice, faint, as if a hand is over the receiver, then the hand being pried off] "Give me that... you bastard, you haven't
even-" [more muffled noises, then a man's voice on the phone:

[Man] "Mr. Ross?"

[The woman, from several feet away] "It's his answering machine."

[Man] "Oh." [relieved] "Uh...Mr. Ross, this is, uh, well, never mind my name, but-"

[Woman in background, yelling] "His name's _________! [name deleted for privacy]

[Man] "Yeah, uh it's_________, that's right. Uh, Mr. Ross, I'm kind of on my honeymoon, and-"

[Woman, screaming now] "KIND OF on your honeymoon?" [muffled sound of hand covering receiver, alternating screaming and soothing tones, but I can't make out the words]

[Man] "Listen, I started reading your book on the plane 'cause it was a four hour flight, you know, and now I just can't put it down. And it's pretty long, you know, so I'm still not finished, and my wife, well, I haven't been paying enough attention to her, and-"

[Woman, screaming loud enough for me to hear even though the man quickly covers the mouthpiece again] "IT'S THE SECOND DAY OF OUR HONEYMOON AND YOU HAVEN'T EVEN FUCKED ME YET!"

[Man] Um, I guess you heard that, Mr. Ross. Look, everything's going to be okay, I'm almost finished with it and I can't tell you how much I'm enj- GIVE ME THAT BACK RIGHT NOW!" [Sound of scuffle and phone being hung up].

I got a follow-up call a day later, where the husband assured me that everything was all right and his wife wasn't going to file for an annulment.

With teeth...

Met Adlin of Malaysian alternative rock band Lied a week back. He came down from Kuala Lumpur just to catch Lunarin's album launch. Nice.

Tak Giu

Jacen who composed the 1st track 'Eclipse' on Lunarin's debut is an indie film director as well. His film 'Tak Giu' has won quite a bit of fanfare. If you haven't watched it yet, here you go.

"Tak Giu" (15mins, Singlish/with English subtitles) is an indie film which follows the journey of 3 soccer-crazy boys. Having taken up the challenge of a friendly soccer match, the boys realise that it is not easy to find a good, free public soccer field in Singapore…..if there’s any at all. Through their journey they encounter obnoxious care-takers, locked-up fences, deterring weather and a persistent policeman. Will they be able to find their dream soccer pitch?

The story explores the issues of soccer amenities, and the attitudes of Singaporeans towards local and foreign soccer.

Cast: Daison Png, Stanley Huang, Jacen Tan, Lee Whye Leong,
Mohd Suhaimi
Written, Directed and Produced by Jacen Tan.

Son Volt + Calexico/ Iron And Wine

Got this off Billy's blog. Found this link to download entire concerts of Son Volt. Jay Farrar has a better voice (at least, in the traditional sense) than Jeff Tweedy. Their work in Uncle Tupelo (Thanks, Keith for the CD-R! I think I might still have it somewhere.) is phenomenal... Great stuff

When my old hard disk was still working, it was stockful of Calexico's mp3s. Lovely shit. But I don't use P2P softwares anymore. In fact, I don't even know where to download the softwares! Kazaa Lite, I heard, has died a quiet death and there's nothing much to download from there anyway. I miss AudioGalaxy which is heaps better than Napster anyway. Iron And Wine is Calexico's sister band and both acts have collaborated on a project. To download their live sets, click here.

Good weekend...

Had a pretty decent show in the past weekend, opening for Lunarin. So it was all good. We is starting another mad round of preparation for our next gig in 2 weeks time. Good vibes. The post-gig party was pretty strenous as we were drinking until 5am.

Lunarin played a great set, upping their usual drama mama rock theatrics. They dressed the Guinness Theatre nicely with props and whole visuals. Excellent touch to bring Natalie on for the single 'Silverpiece' and my current favourite 'The Chrysalis'. When the usual technical glitches occured, Kah 'Wylde' was game enough to dance for the audience. Of course, it's always fun to heckle your friends when they are playing on stage. Will post some photos when I can get my hands on them...

On Sunday, I managed to catch the new Documentary In Amber line-up for Stasis 8. Good stuff. The new guitarist Dakai has better chops and more inventive playing than their previous guitarist. In my books, the best post-rock band in town, for now. They have da technical chops and da right amount of ambience and atmosphere, instead of relying on the highly clinched soft-loud chording dynamics of the post-rock movement. Bah...

Managed to catch a bit of Ugly In The Morning's set. Always a joy to watch them live though...

Billy boy gets a new blog

Chekkit out here.

Know your enemy, indeed...

My friend, Dino from Force Vomit recounts how the raid at Paul's Place KL on New Year's Eve here. It's pretty shitty. I reckon our northern neighbours' government is really getting all panicky about black metal corroding the Asian values. I've always thought that of Mariah Carey and Celine Dion though. Hmmmm...

For the full story, check out this site. Apparently, it's a big hoo-haa in Kuala Lampur right now.
